Hello! I’m Ollie, and normally I write and film things for a living.
I’ve left my job as a sports reporter for the BBC to spend a year in the Northwest Territories, which has been a lifelong ambition.
My last day at the BBC was the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Coming straight from reporting at my home Olympics, the biggest working commitment of my life to date, into this environment could not be a bigger change – and it thrills me. I just finished living one dream and now, here’s another one.
I realise that for everyone already living in Fort Liard, the Northwest Territories is home and pretty much the same as it was yesterday and the day before. I don’t want to lose sight of that, I know the challenges of life here are all too familiar for many residents and nothing like as interesting for them as things might be for me.
The reason we’re here is to help out in any way that makes sense and that actually contributes something. (This is why I’ve reluctantly left the cricket bat at home.) But I hope we can tell the story of the community at the same time.
